The White Rann at Dhordo is one of India's most striking landscapes, about 350 km from Jamnagar. With a little planning it makes an unforgettable two- or three-day trip.
When to go
The salt flats are at their whitest from about November to February, which is also when the Rann Utsav runs, with tent stays, folk music and craft stalls. Full-moon nights are especially popular, so book early.
The route
The drive runs through Morbi and on to Bhuj, the historic capital of Kutch. Most travellers stop a night in Bhuj — for the Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal and craft villages like Bhujodi — before continuing about 80 km north to Dhordo for sunset. Kalo Dungar, the highest point in Kutch, gives wide views across the Rann the next morning.
Permits and practical tips
- A visitor permit is needed for the White Rann. It can be arranged online or at the checkpost on the way.
- Desert nights in winter are cold — pack a warm jacket.
- Carry photo ID for hotel check-ins and the permit.
Which cab?
For long distances, an SUV or Innova gives a more comfortable ride. Book a multi-day round trip so the same car takes you from Jamnagar to Bhuj, the Rann and back — see our Rann of Kutch trip guide or call 99982 22323.
